“Contrary to what I might have thought, the scientific approach did not consist simply of observing, accumulating experimental data and deriving a theory. It began with the invention of a possible world, or a fragment of a possible world, to confront it, through experimentation, with the outside world. And it was this never-ending dialogue between imagination and experience that enabled us to form an ever finer representation of what we call reality”.

François Jacob, Biologist, Physician, Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology
